This policy explains what personal information Scooter125 collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read, not to be survived. Our obligations under the Protection of Personal Information Act are set out separately in the POPIA notice.

Who we are
Scooter125 is operated by Jimmy Smith, trading as Scooter125, a sole proprietor in South Africa. There is no separate registered company, so no company registration number applies. Our address is 292 Surrey Avenue, 1st Floor, Randburg, Johannesburg, Gauteng, 2194. For anything about your personal information, including access, correction or deletion, write to privacy@scooter125.net and we will respond within a reasonable time.
What we collect
- When you browse. Pages viewed, searches and filters used, approximate location from your IP address, device and browser type. Through Google Analytics we also record when you send an enquiry, tap a WhatsApp or phone button, set up an alert or an account, run a valuation or buy a promotion, together with the listing or form involved.
- When you contact a seller. We record that an enquiry button was used, and on which listing. The WhatsApp conversation itself happens on WhatsApp and we never see it. When you send an enquiry we also keep how you reached the listing: the campaign link you clicked, if any, the site that referred you and the page you landed on, and an approximate location (town and province) worked out from your IP address.
- When you list a bike. Your name, email address, mobile number and everything you enter about the bike, including its location and photographs.
- When you are a dealer. Business contact details, the stock feed you supply, and the credentials needed to read it.
Why we collect it
- To show you bikes and let you filter them.
- To put you in touch with a seller.
- To publish your listing, which by its nature makes your mobile number visible to buyers.
- To keep the site working, spot fraudulent listings and prevent abuse.
What we never do
We do not sell your personal information. We do not pass your details to finance or insurance providers. We do not send you marketing you did not ask for.
Who we share it with
Sellers see enquiries you send them. With each enquiry they also see how you reached the listing (the campaign, the referring site and the landing page) and your approximate town, so they can tell which of their advertising brings buyers. They do not receive your IP address. Our hosting and email suppliers process data on our behalf under contract. Our website hosting and email are provided by Hosting.com, on servers in New York in the United States. Card and EFT payments are processed by PayFast, in South Africa. The approximate location for an enquiry is looked up from your IP address by ipapi.co, in the United States; only the address is sent and the result is kept for a week. Google processes analytics data on our behalf, on servers in the United States, under Google’s data processing terms. Dealer stock feeds reach us through Amazon CloudFront, which serves from locations outside South Africa. Because several of these suppliers are outside the country, the POPIA notice sets out the safeguards that apply.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used and which listings and pages get attention. Google receives the pages you view, the events listed above, your approximate location, and your device and browser type. It does not receive your name, your email address, your phone number or the text of any message you send. Google processes this data on our behalf on servers outside South Africa, which the POPIA notice covers. Analytics is switched off for anyone signed in to the site, so dealers and sellers managing their own listings are not measured. You can stop Google Analytics on any site with Google’s browser add-on, or by blocking its cookies in your browser; the site works the same without it.
Saved bikes
When you tap the heart on a listing, its reference is stored in your own browser, on the device you are using. We do not receive or keep that list. When you open the saved page, your browser sends us the references on its list so we can show the listings that are still published; that request is handled like any other page request and is not stored against you. Clearing your browser’s stored data clears the list. Nothing about it is tied to your name, and no account is needed.
Cookies
We use cookies to keep the site working: to keep you signed in and to carry a purchase through checkout. We also use Google Analytics, which sets its own cookies so it can tell one visit from another; see Analytics above. We do not use advertising cookies and we do not track you across other websites. Dealer pages embed a Google map so you can get directions. That map is loaded by Google, which receives your IP address and the page you are on. If you would rather it did not, do not open a dealer page. Your saved bikes are not kept in a cookie; see Saved bikes above. One small cookie of our own, sc125_attr, remembers how you arrived on the site so that an enquiry can be traced to the advert that brought you. It lasts thirty days and is read by nobody but us. Your last search on the listings pages is kept in your own browser, not sent to us, so we can offer it back next time; Forget it on that bar clears it.
How long we keep it
- Listings and their contact details: while the listing is live, and for twelve months after it is sold or removed.
- Contact form messages: two years.
- How an enquiry reached us, and the approximate location: kept with the enquiry, for the same period as the enquiry.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, and object to us using it. Contact us and we will action it. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Information Regulator, whose details are in the POPIA notice.
Children
Scooter125 is not intended for anyone under 18 and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above. If a change materially affects you, we will say so on the site.
